Kurt Tong

1 October 2024 until January 18 2025

Exhibition opening: 1 October 2024, 7 p.m.

BTV Stadtforum Innsbruck, Free entrance

The Chinese artist Kurt Tong is heading to Tyrol. From Hong Kong to Innsbruck, into the valleys, to mountain villages and hidden hamlets. Into this Central European cultural landscape, which was foreign to him, with its mythologies, rites and customs that have been alive for centuries. He sees snow-capped mountains that loom like sentinels and forests where the shadows whisper timeless stories of devils and saints. Kurt Tong deals with tradition, folklore, rituals and strategies of memory. His work moves between fiction and document, staging and meticulous historical research. In addition to the focus on photography, more recent works contain elements of installation and sculpture. For INN SITU he follows in the footsteps of Krampus and Santa Claus with his camera, exploring the constant dance between light and darkness, good and evil. The region in the Alps, steeped in tradition, serves as a setting for the artist with Asian roots, who grew up in the British-influenced metropolis, to immerse himself in the yin and yang, in the universal duality of human nature.

Kurt Tong (*1977) studied documentary photography at the London College of Communication and lives and works in Hong Kong. He has been working on freelance projects since 2006. His work is shown worldwide, including in the Himalaya Museum Shanghai, the Finnish Museum of Photography and Rencontres d’Arles. The book “Combing for Ice and Jade” was published by Jiazazhi Press in 2019 and was named one of the best photography books of 2019 by Time, El País and Esquire. He is a recipient of the Swiss Prix Elysee, one of the most prestigious awards for photography in Europe. His book “Dear Franklin” was chosen by MOMA in New York as one of the 10 best photo books of 2022. Kurt Tong is represented by Jen Bekman Gallery in New York, Up Gallery Taiwan and The Photographer’s Gallery in London. His work as part of the INN SITU series is the artist’s first solo exhibition in German-speaking countries
